Hello all.I got a for free, told to be 'not working properly, troubles with sound'. Externally good, except for some texts are partly missing around the VU-meter.Mechanically it works, but there is no sound (headphones or line out). When I press Play I can hear a low click like an amp starting (also sliding between Dolby/tape selector switches makes faint clicks) but other than that there is absolutely no sound. I tried to google around and got some writings about broken DC-DC converters - any comments on that?

If that's the cause, is that repairable? Finally an update to this thread.Couple of weeks ago a friend of mine gave me his WM-D6C for repairs (rec volume pot broken, as in ).

While having a look on it, I remembered my own unit (as mentioned above, mute) and got it back to the workbench. My unit was actually of the earlier type with a jungle of wires going on inside, my friend's unit was of the later type with SMD parts and considerably less wires going around the boards.As suggested above, I checked the DC-DC-converter, it was found to be working just fine.Then, as suggested by ben, I checked the capacitor feeding the amp IC, and bingo: it was shorted! It's a small 220uF 4V cap, marked on the attached photo. Physically smallest replacement I had was a 16V one, but there was no problem fitting it in as it has the whole footprint of the IC around it. After fitting the replacement cap, I had sound againThe unit was soon assembled again, given a quick cleaning both inside and outside and it has now been playing music for background as I have been typing this.
